Slurry Pump Stuffing Box

Stuffing Box
The pump stuffing box is used to control the product leakage from the pump along the shaft. Inside the bore of the stuffing box houses gland packings and a lantern restrictor. A tapping point in the stuffing box allows a water injection to be made into the lantern restrictor usually at a pressure of 1 bar greater than the center of the stuffing box. Occasionally a lantern ring can be used in place of the lantern restrictor especially where the quantity of clean flushing liquid needs to be reduced to prevent the dilution of the slurry being pumped.
A worn or pitted stuffing box bore will make shaft sealing difficult resulting in excessive leakage of either gland sealing water or slurry. The stuffing box should be replaced if the bore is suspected to be worn usually this must be done when the pump is being overhauled.
Common materials used in the manufacture of stuffing boxes is a cast iron type material but if possible I recommend that chrome alloy is used instead giving a much longer service life.
